		Advertisers are geniuses at telling a story and evoking powerful emotions in 30 seconds or just a single image. That snapshot carries the magic of transporting us to another world or giving us perspective on our own, especially when humor is involved. Advertising has certainly set the standard for that type of communication. Yes, advertising has the power to educate, but to say that is actually does is a stretch. Education expands our thinking and our world, while the companies paying for the ads really want to narrow our focus to their product. For small companies, I believe advertising is essential to connect customers with real needs with service providers. Large companies generally just use it to make us feel insecure and urge us to conform. Given large corporations' intentional overreach in our lives and our government, I do what I can to stay away from their insistence that I need them."

Mobile solutions for libraries that work!

We invite you to the 6th Handheld Librarian conference, a place where interested librarians bring their tools and strategies to the learning scene. The conference will feature professional development for librarians by librarians. This is the grass-roots nature of our highly successful program. Handheld Librarian VI will build on the success of prior conferences in which an array of presenters share their experiences and insights on topics addressing themes such as ebooks, location-based social networking, lending devices, reference and mobile technologies impacting society. You can see the quality of the content by looking through our past archives.

Our exciting one day conference, February 1, will feature presentations from your peers, along with two keynotes from respected thought leaders in the library world.

Michael Stephens, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, will address the conference in the morning. His research focuses on use of emerging technologies in libraries and technology learning programs. He currently writes the monthly column “Office Hours” in Library Journal exploring issues, ideas and emerging trends in library and information science education. Stephens has spoken about emerging technologies, innovation, and libraries to audiences in over 26 states and in five countries, including a 2009 speaking/research tour of Australia.

Our afternoon keynote features Stephen Abram. Stephen has over 30 years in libraries as a practicing librarian and in the information industry. He has visited hundreds of libraries in many different countries and is uniquely positioned to spark ideas and insights. Stephen is currently Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Markets at Gale Cengage in Toronto, Canada. He has been Vice President Innovation for SirsiDynix and the Chief Strategist for the SirsiDynix Institute, VP of Corporate Development for Micromedia ProQuest, and Publisher Electronic Information for Thompson

New* Post-Conference Skill Builders Workshops – Two additional opportunities!

New this year, a post conference experience focused on giving participants explicit hands on skills through extended workshops. For a nominal fee, participants can register for the following two-hour synchronous workshops on February 2.

• Broad mobile development, including jQuery

• Empowering your E-readers; teaching your readers to access content

Launched in 2002, HINARI Access to Research in Health programme is managed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with Yale University Library and over 145 publishers. 4700 public institutions in 105 eligible countries have already registered for access to HINARI, which provides access to over 8100 peer-reviewed journals covering medicine, nursing and related health and social sciences. It also includes many databases, indexes and reference books, as well as journals in several languages. The journals can be searched through a special version of PubMed (Medline), and other article indexes.

2. AGORA
Launched in 2003, AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture) is managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in partnership with Cornell University and over 70 publishers. Over 2400 institutions have registered for access to AGORA which provides access to over 3000 high quality international journals covering agriculture, fisheries, food, nutrition, veterinary science and related biological, environmental and social sciences in public institutions across the world. It also includes several important databases and indexes. The journal can be searched using a special subset of CAB Abstracts.

3. OARE
Launched in 2006, OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment) is managed by theUnited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with Yale University and more than 75 publishers. OARE provides access to more than 3900 scientific journals and other information resources in a wide range of disciplines contributing to our understanding of the natural environment, including environmental toxicology and pollution, zoology, botany, ecology, environmental chemistry, geology, hydrology, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, geography, environmental economics, environmental law and policy, conservation policy and planning, environmental biotechnology, environmental engineering, energy, and many other disciplines. 2200 institutions are now registered for access to these journals which can be searched through a number of abstracting and indexing databases.

4. ARDI
Launched in 2009, ARDI (Access to Research for Development and Innovation) is coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization together with its partners in the publishing industry with the aim to promote the integration of developing and least developed countries into the global knowledge economy, allowing them to more fully realize their creative and innovative potential. By improving access to scholarly literature from diverse fields of science and technology, the ARDI programme is designed to reinforce the knowledge infrastructure in developing and least developed countries and to support researchers in these countries in creating and developing new solutions to technical challenges faced on a local and global level.

The SILF 2012 will take place in conjunction with the celebration of the 60th birthday of the Shanghai Library.

Mrs. Ingrid Parent[a1] , the IFLA President, will address the conference as a keynoter.

The theme of SILF 2012 is “Smart City & Library Service”. This forum, centering on the latest progress, practical experience and future trends related to the theme, will cover keynote speeches, plenary sessions and individual symposia. The forum encourages dialogues in the following contexts:

2. Coming of the New Integrated Library System: Supporting Cloud Computing and Mobile Services

3. Enabling Librarians to Proliferate Digital Reading and Preserve Digital Memories

4. Management and Performance Evaluation of a Hybrid Library

6. The Core Values and Competitiveness of the Physical Library in an Omni-media Age

Submission Guidelines

Papers to be submitted must be the original work of the author(s) and shall never be published or included in any other proceedings.

All papers will be peer-reviewed by the Program Committee. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings available for the forum.

*Abstracts of papers offered for presentation at SILF 2012 will also be considered by the Editors of Libri: international journal of libraries and information services,[a2] and authors of papers on suitable topics will be invited to submit their papers or a revised version for consideration for publication in the journal.

The IFLA Governing Board bestows Honours and Awards to recognise individuals
contributing to IFLA and the international library and information services

Honorary Fellow is IFLA's highest award, and is awarded on the basis of
merit. It may not necessarily be awarded every year. A nomination for
Honorary Fellow is required to be supported by at least three nominators who
are current IFLA Members. Nominations must include evidence to support any
claims against the criteria. A nomination must be accompanied by at least two
written referee reports. Referees should not also be nominators, and at least
one referee should be an IFLA Member. Referees should address the nominee's
suitability for the award, in relation to the criteria and may provide

at the 78th World Library and Information Congress on the

11-17 August 2012

Session title: Making the case for change through evaluation: post-occupancy

evaluation of library buildings

The architectural realisation of a building and its opening to the public with a range

of services are central components of the building and design process of libraries.

Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) is the final step in this process. It provides a useful

opportunity to assess whether the construction and design of the building has indeed

met the library’s and users’ requirements and how effectively the building functions

for both users and library staff as well as how easy it is to maintain. As buildings

age and as various external and internal changes impact upon them, it is necessary

to be able to provide an objective and empirical assessment of how such buildings

and the spaces within them function as well as identifying problems and proposing

solutions to the governing bodies.

The Library Buildings & Equipment Standing Committee is looking for papers which

discuss innovative ways to evaluate space, functions, services and maintenance of

new and old library buildings. We are particularly interested in case studies that

highlight the reasons for, the methodology used and the outcome of, a Post-

Occupancy Evaluation of a library building. Special emphasis should be given to the

economic implications of effective and efficient operations and maintenance in

relation to financial constraints. The evaluation can consider a single aspect such as

service patterns, functional design issues, technical systems issues, or legibility

issues from the various perspectives of the users, library staff and architects. We

would like the programme to balance theoretical approaches and best practice case

studies of Post-Occupancy Evaluation in library design and construction.

The theme of WLIC 2012, “Libraries now! Inspiring, Surprising, Empowering” should

provide the context of the presentation.

The following should be provided:

- name and institution of presenter(s)

- an abstract of the paper describing the project, process or research carried

out (1 page, up to 350 words) preferably in English

- relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s)

Send your proposals by 31th, January 2012 via e-mail to the chair of the LBE section

Dorothea Sommer (dorothea.sommer@bibliothek.uni-halle.de).

The abstracts will be reviewed and selected by a Review Committee. The paper can

be given at the congress in any of IFLA’s official languages. Successful proposals will

be identified and announced by February 20, 2012.

If a paper is selected authors must commit to presenting it in Helsinki.

All presenters and their papers will be listed in the final IFLA Programme. Therefore

presenters must forward the full text of their papers by April 15, 2012 to allow time

for review and for preparation of translations. The time allowed for the presentation

will be 20 minutes. Papers should be no longer than 20 pages.

Expenses:

Please note that it is the presenters’ responsibility to find funding for their

participation (registration fee, travel, accommodation and associated costs). IFLA is

not in a position to fund attendance at the Congress.

Tema de la Sesión: La evaluación post-inauguración de los edificios bibliotecarios como instrumento para desarrollar propuestas de modificación.

La creación de un edificio bibliotecario y su apertura al público con toda la gama de servicios son aspectos esenciales en el proceso de diseño y construcción de las bibliotecas. La evaluación post-inauguración es el paso final de este proceso, ya que proporciona la oportunidad de saber si el diseño del edificio responde a las necesidades de la biblioteca, del personal y de los usuarios. También muestra la funcionalidad del mismo así como aspectos relacionados con el mantenimiento posterior. Es necesario conocer el comportamiento del edificio e identificar los problemas que genera, con el fin de proporcionar a los órganos rectores un diagnóstico objetivo sobre cómo el edificio pueda reaccionar tanto al paso del tiempo como a la necesidad de posibles cambios que se quieran efectuar.

La Sección de Edificios y Equipamientos de Biblioteca busca comunicaciones sugerentes que ofrezcan sistemas de evaluación de los espacios, las funciones, los servicios y el mantenimiento de edificios bibliotecarios, tanto de nueva planta como existentes. Estamos particularmente interesados en casos prácticos que indiquen las causas, la metodología y los resultados de las evaluaciones post-ocupacionales. También es importante analizar la relación entre las operaciones de mantenimiento y los presupuestos destinados para el mismo. La evaluación puede ser también sobre aspectos concretos como pautas de servicio, funcionalidad del edificio, tecnología, aspectos legales, etc., todo ello desde diferentes puntos de vista (usuarios, personal bibliotecario y arquitectos). Nos gustaría compaginar propuestas teóricas con otras que muestren buenas prácticas sobre evaluación post-ocupacional sobre el diseño y la construcción de los edificios bibliotecarios.

El tema central del Congreso, “Las bibliotecas de hoy: Inspiración, Sorpresa, Poder”, debería formar parte del contexto de las presentaciones.

Los interesados en presentar comunicaciones en estas sesiones deberán enviar una propuesta que incluya:

- nombre e institución del comunicante(s)

- un resumen de la comunicación que describa el proyecto, el proceso o la investigación desarrollada (1 página, máximo 350 palabras), preferiblemente en inglés.

- Información biográfica relevante del autor(es) o comunicante(s)

Las propuestas deben ser remitidas antes día 31 de enero de 2012 por correo electrónico al presidente de la Sección de Edificios y Equipamientos: Dorothea Sommer (dorothea.sommer@bibliothek.uni-halle.de).

Los resúmenes serán revisados y seleccionados por un Comité de selección. La comunicación podrá ser presentada en cualquiera de las lenguas oficiales de IFLA. Antes del 20 de febrero de 2012 se anunciarán a los interesados las propuestas seleccionadas.

Si la propuesta es seleccionada, los autores deben comprometerse a presentarla en Helsinki.

Todos los comunicantes y sus comunicaciones aparecerán en el Programa final del Congreso. Por tanto, los comunicantes seleccionados deberán enviar el texto íntegro de sus comunicaciones antes del 15 de abril de 2012, con el fin de que haya tiempo para la revisión y traducción. Invite submissions of papers for the De Gruyter Saur / IFLA Research Paper Award 2012

This is an annual award for the best research paper on a topic of importance to publishing and access to information.

Topic

Libraries and eBooks, challenges and chances

Submissions are invited to focus on one of several of the following subthemes:

eBook challenges for libraries and how to solve them:

Contracts, terms and conditions
Access and preservation
Interoperability, rights and restrictions
eBooks in daily workflow of the library

Strengthening the library-publisher relationship in the age of eBooks

How can libraries work with new players in the eBook market (Amazon and Apple)?

Social reading and innovation in the provision of library eBook services

The award is aimed at encouraging research and publication by those relatively new to the profession. Those with no more than eight years of professional experience in library and information services are eligible.

The award is an amount of EUR 1,000 (one thousand Euros)

The selected paper must have been written no earlier than January 2011 and not yet to have been published. The paper's maximum length should be approx. 5,000 words and should be submitted in English.

The selection panel for the award comprises two IFLA members, IFLA's Director of Policy & Advocacy and IFLA's Director of Communications & Services. All applicants will be required to give De Gruyter Saur the right to publish their submitted paper.

Both IFLA and De Gruyter Saur will announce and further publicize the award via their websites, relevant mailing lists, journals and newsletters, press conferences, news releases etc.

The recipient of the award will be announced at the IFLA President's Lunch during the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Helsinki, August 2012. If the recipient is attending this Congress s/he will also be invited to the President's Lunch.

Papers, accompanied by the completed application form, must be submitted by 30 April 2012. Incomplete application forms will not be considered and the decisions of the jury are final.

Theme: Empowering Library Users to Solve Problems: Our Stories

The IFLA Social Sciences Libraries Section, in cooperation with the Law Libraries Section and the Government Libraries Section, is seeking proposals for papers to be presented at a two-hour program to be held at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Helsinki, Finland, 11-16 August 2012.

As social scientists we are interested in data gathering and its impact. Therefore, we are seeking submissions related to results of qualitative and quantitative assessments and examples of how libraries have used these assessments to answer the needs of users. Specifically we would like case studies/papers that show the impact of gathering data and how the data gathering process led to changed or improved services. Our focus is not on how data was gathered – but how that data was used to empower users. We prefer submissions that demonstrate real experiences/case studies – papers that tell a story. Examples of paper topics could include descriptions of interventions/changes made after data was collected, attempts to understand how users use information, stories of how data gathering led to new services, etc.

The program will feature up to five presentations of 15-20 minutes each with additional time for questions.

Papers should reflect the conference theme, “Libraries Now! – Inspiring, Surprising, Empowering,” as well as the conference track, “users driving access and services.”

Elsevier Foundation Awards 2011 Grants to Advance Women in Science and Support Libraries in Developing Countries

$650,000 awarded to Innovative Libraries, New Scholars and Nurse Faculty Programs

Amsterdam, January 10, 2012 – The Elsevier Foundation announced today the 2011 grant recipients for the Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries and New Scholars award programs. In total, $650,000 has been committed to nine institutions around the world in addition to seven ongoing multiyear grants and the Nurse Faculty program. The Elsevier Foundation is funded by Elsevier , a global provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services,

“Each of the diverse projects supported by the Elsevier Foundation has the potential for an immediate and enduring impact on our health and science communities,” said David Ruth, Executive Director of the Elsevier Foundation and Senior Vice President Global Communications, Elsevier. “We welcome the chance to support these organizations’ efforts to foster new ways to leverage science and health information for development and to facilitate career development in STM fields.”

Innovative Libraries

The Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries program awards grants to libraries for innovation in improving access and use of scientific, technical and medical information. Past projects include: expanding information resources through digitization and knowledge preservation; training and education for librarians and researchers, and developed-developing world partnerships providing longer term technical assistance and training.

The 2011 library grant recipients address real developing world issues through the use of STM information resources and include:

·        A Solution in Sight: Eight Developing Country Resource Centers Improve Access to the World’s Ophthalmic Information , Seva Foundation, US

·       Strengthening Agricultural Researchers and Extension Staff‘s Skills for Access to, Use and sharing of Agricultural Information Resources in Tanzania, Sokoine National Agricultural Library , Tanzania

·        Collaboration for Evidence Based Healthcare, Library Training, Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Netherlands

·        Nuclear Claims Tribunal Records Preservation, Nuclear Claims Tribunal , Republic of the Marshall Island

·       Improving Library Resource Sharing Through the Union Catalogue Among Laos Libraries Central Library, National University of Laos , Laos

"With access to scientific information revolutionized in the Global South through diverse access initiatives, embedding the daily use of high quality peer reviewed journals within universities, remains the key challenge," said Jan Donner, President of the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands (KIT). "The Elsevier Foundation's library grants are so important because they emphasize the critical role that librarians play in supporting researchers, doctors and nurses in implementing evidence based work.”

New Scholars

The New Scholars Program supports projects to help early- to mid-career women scientists balance family responsibilities with demanding academic careers and addresses the attrition rate of talented women scientists. Recent grants have promoted institutional research, advocacy, and policy development to retain, recruit and develop women in science and have enabled researchers to attend conferences critical to their careers by assisting with childcare, mentorship and networking.

·        Get Ahead with Optics: Career Development for Women in Science, University of Carthage, Engineering School of Communications, Tunisia

·        Rethinking the Future of the STEM Workforce: Best Practices in Work-Life Effectiveness, Association of Women in Science, US

"The attrition of top talent from the scientific workforce severely hampers countries’ ability to lead in innovation and stay globally competitive in these disciplines,” said Janet Bandows Koster, Executive Director & CEO of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS). “We know that professional women with the skills needed for successful careers in these fields are available, yet often choose to leave the workforce because of outmoded institutional structures. The New Scholars program has been integral to exploring innovative approaches for a more family friendly academia. We look forward to working with the program to spearhead a fresh, forward-looking dialogue with global thought leaders."
In 2011, the Elsevier Foundation’s Nurse Faculty Program also awarded a multiyear grant to Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing to develop an 18 month leadership academy and alleviate the nursing faculty shortage through retaining and transitioning new nurse educators to the faculty role.

2011 Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries

Grant Awards

A Solution in Sight: Eight Developing Country Resource Centers Improve Access to the World’s Ophthalmic Information, Seva Foundation , US
80% of the world's blindness is avoidable through treatment or prevention. The WHO’s Vision 2020: the Right to Sight campaign targets curable blindness in their global campaign to impact vision loss. The Seva Foundation has proposed a compelling project aimed at benefiting hundreds of eye hospitals that lack organized resource centers and trained librarians. Eight collaborating resource centers in major recognized eye care institutions: Al Noor Magrabi Foundation in Egypt; Visualiza in Guatemala; Aravind Eye Care System, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya, & Vivekananda Mission Asram Netra Niramay Niketan in India; Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology in Tanzania; and Lumbini Eye Institute in Nepal will work with the Seva Foundation and the Association of Vision Science Librarians (AVSL) to provide training, mentoring, and tool development to significantly enhance the librarians’ ability to make relevant scientific, technical, and medical information available to eye doctors and health care workers locally, regionally, and globally.
Strengthening Agricultural Researchers and Extension Staff‘s Skills for Access to, Use and Sharing of Agricultural Information Resources in Tanzania, Sokoine National Agricultural Library , Tanzania
While information and communication technologies have become more widely available in many developing countries, the skills needed to take full advantage of e-resources are still under-developed. The work of agricultural researchers and extension staff, who play a central role in economic development, is significantly enhanced by tailored training in the search, use and sharing of the information that is now accessible through these technologies. Sokoine National Agricultural Library, a university and national library with a mandate to disseminate agricultural information to Tanzania’s diverse stakeholders, has developed a project with the potential for major impact on food production and security. It will strengthen the agricultural network within the country and will specifically target farmers--the most challenging link in the information literacy chain.
Collaboration for Evidence Based Healthcare, Library Training, Royal Tropical Institute
Evidence Based Health Care or Medicine (EBHC) is major priority in medical faculties, schools of public health, national ministries in wealthier countries and in the WHO. This project focuses on the key role played by information specialists in the practice and implementation of EBHC in the developing world. Medical doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers across eight African countries will be taught the skills of searching and retrieving, evaluating and implementing medical literature and evidence into clinical and public health to improve patient care. Courses will be conducted in medical schools, schools of public health and libraries in Ethiopia, Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, with a continuously growing group of partners. The project is driven by the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands (KIT), the central partner in the Collaboration for Evidence Based Healthcare in Africa (CEBHA), a network of faculties of medicine, schools of public health, ministries and NGOs that support an African healthcare system based on informed and evidence-based decisions. CEBHA will also provide the expertise to adapt the program to issues that are commonly found in the developing world such as feasibility, limited resources, medication compliance issues and alternative and complementary medicine.
Nuclear Claims Tribunal Records Preservation, Nuclear Claims Tribunal
On March 1st 1954, Bravo, the most powerful nuclear bomb ever tested by the US government, was detonated in the Marshall Islands. One thousand times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, it led to significant radiological contamination and international concern about atmospheric thermonuclear testing which continued in the Islands for another four years. With a grant from the Elsevier Foundation this project will preserve the library of the Nuclear Claims Tribunal in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). The Tribunal was established in 1987 as part of a settlement agreement between RMI and the US government. It gave the Tribunal exclusive jurisdiction to settle all claims arising from the Nuclear Testing Program. The library contains unique holdings with hundreds of scientific and medical reports, papers, articles and other documents relating to the nuclear weapons testing program conducted in the Marshall Islands from 1946 to 1958. The goals of the proposed project are to organize, stabilize, and digitize the library holdings and official files of the Tribunal in order to ensure that those records can be made available to future researchers, students, decision-makers, and other interested parties.
Improving Library Resource Sharing Through the Union Catalogue among Laotian Libraries, Central Library, National University of Laos , Laos
With a grant from the Elsevier Foundation, the National University of Laos will provide the Laos Library and Information Consortium (LALIC) with a unified and comprehensive open source digital library information system to increase library staff and users’ access to scientific, technical, and medical information and materials. Researchers from across the 20 member library consortium will be able to access one search engine that compiles all metadata from the library collections’ network and electronic databases; access library collections across member libraries; and specifies the location (e.g., university, library) to access publications.

2011 New Scholars Grant Awards

Scenario Toolkit for Advancing Careers in Science, Portia Ltd (EU)

The European Commission’s recent public consultation on strengthening the role of women in science yielded professional development feedback: the need for career models and pathways; balancing career aspirations and family responsibilities; childcare issues and costs, mobility, dual career couples, and returning after career breaks. The Scenario Toolkit for Advancing Careers in Science targets this call to action to help European women scientists navigate the complex relationships between events and decisions that shape a scientist’s professional development through the doctoral and postdoc stages. Portia, a UK-based non-profit, will pilot the scenario method through workshops delivered with two partners; the Technical University Berlin and Tel Aviv University. Portia’s scenario toolkit moves beyond traditional mentorship to provide an innovative new strategy for improving the career success of female scientists and engineers.

STEM CIC Writing Retreat, University of Nebraska , University of Nebraska-Lincoln, US

With a grant from the Elsevier Foundation, the University of Nebraska aims to retain women scientists by improving research productivity and promoting critical networks through a model STEM writing retreat. A week-long, multi-disciplinary, multi-rank writing retreat at the University of Nebraska (UNL) will be offered to STEM faculty across the “Big 10” universities. With a concerted focus on writing success and social connections, this program has the potential to serve as a model that can be easily replicated across institutions and disciplines to help retain STEM women in academia.

Get Ahead with Optics: Career Development for Women in Science, University of Carthage, Engineering School of Communications, Tunisia

Over the last years, optics research has become an indispensable part of daily life. Fiber optics for telecoms, medical imaging and cancer research, optical parts in cars, computer and 3D screens are at the core of the world’s technical infrastructure. This interdisciplinary proposal from Tunisia aims to orient young women scientists in the dynamic and rapidly evolving field of optics and photonics while providing them with professional development skills and a deeper understanding of what is needed to succeed as a woman scientist. The ten day summer school in optics is a partnership between the University of Carthage’s Engineering School of Communications and Philipps University from Marburg, Germany and offers recent Tunisian and German PhD graduates scientific orientation, career coaching and international exchange to lay the groundwork for a successful scientific career.

Rethinking the Future of the STEM Workforce: Best Practices in Work-Life Effectiveness, Association of Women in Science , US
While women comprise roughly half the US work force, they hold just 24% of STEM jobs according the Department of Commerce. Whether the root causes lie in a lack of female role models, gender stereotyping, or a lack of family friendly flexibility, the resulting attrition in the academic pipeline means that the US is halving its potential for innovation. The Elsevier Foundation New Scholars program has focused on the holistic, work-life dimension of the STEM workplace including dependent care, dual career relationships, mentoring and travel to professional meetings. The Association of Women in Science (AWIS) will collaborate with the New Scholars program to leverage best practice testimony to impel systemic change in the global STEM workplace. Through an international work-life satisfaction survey and a New Scholars Roundtable, AWIS aims distill recommendations into a report that will serve as an action plan to help employers, working women, and policymakers identify, create and sustain systemic changes.
