Happy 2012! New Year resolutions are beloved by some and scorned by others, but we can all agree on the importance of planning. A good beginning is half the work, so let's begin the New Year with a new start. Dust off those technology plans, do some strategic brainstorming and focus on planning for a good year. Build the right foundation and you can spend less time putting out fires and perhaps even get ahead of your to-do list.
What Will Get You to Yes?
What Will Get You to Yes?
TechSoup Global has been working on the Public Access Technology Benchmarks project for over a year now, and we're excited to share what we've learned, and what we hope will be useful tools for the library community. If you'll be in Dallas for ALA MidWinter on Jan 21st, the Urban Libraries Council will lead a session on Saturday to share the first draft of the benchmarks (The Edge Initiative) and invite feedback. Thanks to Sarah's recent blog post, you can see a sneak peek at a sample benchmark right now and consider how it applies to your library. What you would need to answer "yes, we do that" to each of the indicators' bulleted points? What would help you get to Yes? We'd love to hear what you think. Please share your comments in our two-question survey.

Four Ways Technology Plans Pay Off
  1. Technology plans help you make the case for more funding. In these tough economic times, funding is going to organizations that are well organized and have specific goals, as well as a plan for reaching those goals and measuring progress.
  2. Many funders require technology plans. If you're applying for e-rate discounts, technology grants, or government funding, you may need to have a technology plan in place.
  3. By following a technology plan, you're much less likely to give into “technolust” (buying expensive new technology that you can't support due to a lack of ongoing funds, staff time and/or expertise)
  4. Technology planning encourages you to align your IT decisions with the library's overall strategic priorities, the needs of your community, and the requirements of your staff.
Four Ways Technology Plans Pay Off!
Not sure where to start? Of course TechSoup has plenty of resources to help you on your way to writing an excellent technology plan for your library or nonprofit!
If you have a technology planning experience you'd like to share and would like to write a short blog post, we'd love to hear from you. Don't forget that what might be "no big deal" to you may be an "aha!" to someone else! Email us to ask questions, offer feedback, and share your stories so we can all learn from your experiences. We'd love to promote your library in our work.
